When many people think about the first amendment they think about freedom. Freedom makes them think about the Statue of Liberty, the American Flag, and many think about their friends and family overseas fighting for our freedom. According to Dictonary.com, the first amendment is “an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights, prohibiting Congress from interfering with freedom of religion, speech, assembly, or petition.” The Bill of Rights makes up the first of ten amendments to the Constitution of the United States. Without the first amendment, we would be forced to worship something/someone we may not believe in, not be able to speak our own minds, or protest against what we think is wrong within our government systems. When the first amendment was being written, they thought about the people and how they wanted the people to be free and no longer have to be a part of something they did not want to be a part of or have to be completely controlled by the government. Because of this amendment, the people of America are allowed to do what they want, when they want, this excluding causing harm to others. The first amendment is made up of exactly forty-five words. Throughout school we are taught about the all of amendments, however it seems as if the freedom of speech is drilled into students. The freedom of speech was created as a check and balance. This way the government is not over powering the people of the United States. The freedom of speech allows citizens to speak up for what they believe in and also what they believe is wrong. This meaning if an individual wanted to post something on Facebook say that the government is stealing our money or that Obama is a horrible president, they can do it without getting in trouble.
