In the essays “The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted” by Malcolm Gladwell, a sense of change is brought throughout both stories. In the essays, the authors provide an action of change throughout the community. Marquez and Gladwell both demonstrate the concept of change and how a society must have a motivation to change. They also demonstrate the concept of how people are influenced by others to bring about change, but demonstrate it in two different ways. In the essay “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted” it states that it started with four college students who sat down at the lunch counter and began a sit-in due to the fact that the waitress told them that they did not serve Negroes. “It was McNeil who brought up the idea of a sit-in at Woolworth’s” (Malcolm Gladwell 319). This shows that despite of the four students bringing about change it originated from one person. In the essay” The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World” it states, “But they also knew that everything would be different from then on, that their houses would have wider doors, higher ceilings, and stronger floors so that Esteban’s memory could go everywhere without bumping into beams and so that no one in the future would dare whisper the big boob finally died.” This refers back to the concept of how societies must have a motivation to change, but also shows how people are influenced by others to bring about change. One essay uses more than one person to help influence change in the society while the other only uses one person. Despite how many people each essay uses to help influence change throughout the society, it shows the concept that people are influenced by others to bring about change.
