The American Dream is a goal that citizens in every nation of the world strive to achieve. The Dream is a life in which a family can not only survive, but can afford extravagances. In a changing world, these lavishes are becoming less important. This dream of money is no longer enough in today’s society. The American Dream has changed. It is no longer about buying luxuries, instead, it has changed to being able to travel the world, using your abilities and resources to help your fellow humans. If you never help anyone, who will be there to help you when you need it the most? The American Dream is now about altruism, not only about spending money. Conner argues that having tough teachers and bosses prepares people for the “real world,” while she is right in some ways, she is very mistaken in others. She argues for a one-size-fits-all learning environment. One example she gives is a teacher who “stomped, screamed and at times drove his students to tears.” Screaming at students, or at people in general, is unacceptable. Schools should be been recognized as a safe space for students. When students are driven to tears in a classroom, a line must be drawn. Yet this behavior is seen as acceptable, and even worthy of adulation to Conner. A tough teacher is acceptable, a tyrant is not. This “tough teacher” approach may work for some students, but for many others, it will drive them out of schools and discourage them from wanting to learn anything at all.
