The United States was justified in going to war with Mexico. An important reason why they wanted to go to war with Mexico was to achieve a protestant belief called Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny was the belief that the U.S. was meant to encompass the entirety of North America, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Supporters of Manifest Destiny desired expansion so badly, they would risk going to war with other countries to achieve it. They believed that by expanding the U.S., it would confirm that they had God’s will. But, their desire for expansion would come at the expense of Mexicans. Mexico was standing in the way of Americans from extending their territory and achieving Manifest Destiny. It would lead to the California Gold Rush, which brought over 300,000 people to California from around the world to mine gold. Economy was also boosted by the invention of the transcontinental train, as well as allowing businesses to begin in new territories where they could benefit from the west’s rich natural resources. Lastly, conquering Mexico would lead to a drastic change in American populations.
