Why Was Charles Town Difficult to Settle? There were various obstacles encountered while settling Charles Town. The Europeans showed us this when they were attempting to settle Charles Town. Sir Robert Heath received a grant from King Charles I saying he can settle the vast area of Virginia to Florida(Background Essay). South Carolina would be named after King Charles I. While Heath’s attempt didn’t work, the grant would be renewed in 1663 when King Charles II would reward the 8 Lords Proprietors, giving ownership to the land called Carolina. As Charles Town started to thrive, its future was still not certain. The difficulties while settling Charles Town were geography, resources, diseases and Native Americans. While settling Charles Town settlers faced problems due to inaccurate maps. The maps were established in England by memory so they are going to be inaccurate. Obstacles that a cartographer would have encountered is not knowing where some things are because they didn’t have technology back then to create maps. This map is not trustworthy because according to Document A it was written by hand so it isn’t precise and the ocean is on the wrong side of the map.
