The findings of Herman von Helmholtz are important because he demonstrated that nerves conduct electricity, they do not behave like wires. He measured the speed of conduction in nerves and calculated that it was significantly slower than the speed of light. These nerves process input stimuli slower, however, more accurately than the conduction process that occurs in other objects, such as electricity. Helmholtz also believed there were different levels of conduction speed, meaning the brain functions at a much slower pace, much like the nerves.
