Only a few could escape this fate if they found a non racist community with laws opposite from the country surrounding them. This is another reason Reconstruction was a failure for many reasons. It was an era after the civil war between the years of 1865 to 1877 when the country had to realize that all people needed rights. It was disorganized and had many problems. The state's laws still to this day override federal law so small communities could still discriminate and put themselves above the african americans in the country. They did this legally and with violence. This was because of hate groups like the KKK that would intimidate people and kill people. Also it was a good first step because it may have started other civil rights movements. But ultimately it was a failure because of racist politicians and other complications such as the shutdown of the railroads and the loss in wages. Reconstruction should have succeeded so that equal rights could have been available for everybody but because of its failure it led to a long period of unfair treatment of our african american citizens. These are some of the reasons why reconstruction was a failure and how it could have succeeded if there was not such a racist presence in the south and around the country in the 1860’s.
