Why Was The Movie Popular In The 1930's

By the end of the 1930’s over 65% of the nation attended the movies once a week (Pautz). This is due largely to the fact of the dropped admission prices in the theaters. By 1933, 40% of movie attendance and industry had fallen because of the Great Depression (Price). The movie industry had to do something to bring more people to come to the movies so theatres lowered admission prices and gave away cash prizes in order to boost admission. This did boost admission but it wasn’t the main reason people went to the movies. People looked for a way to get their mind off of the Depression and that is why people attended so often. During the 1930’s, going to the movies provided a great escape from the hardships of the Great Depression. Going to the movies became very popular during this time period. One of the reasons it became popular is because Hollywood dropped the prices for admission by more than 25 cents (Price). With the price of admission down, going to the movies became cheaper. Movies such as comedy’s appealed to audiences because those types of movies made citizens smile and laugh for the first time in awhile which they were accustomed to because of the hardships that the Depression brought on. Going to the movies for most families was like going on a mini vacation. Families escaped the cold, darkness, and loneliness of the Depression by attending the movies for a short time.
