American citizens should not be required to vote strictly because America is a free country and should not force its citizens to vote. Growing up in the modern day society, many people don’t really follow politics and don’t really care about who becomes the president. Their stand towards the election is neutral which means they can be voting for someone who they actually don’t want since they don’t follow politics. Although many countries around the world makes voting voluntary, a lot of countries also make it a requirement for their citizens which makes no sense if their government is in the form of democracy. Democracy means that citizens should have the freedom to do what they want and not be forced. Although people might say that you should be required to vote in order for the government to hear your voice, this will go against democracy if forced upon. For example in text 1 it states, “Jury duty is mandatory; why not voting?” This says that voting should be required in order for the people’s voice to be heard, however, what if someone just doesn’t want to interfere with politics? You can’t just make them vote because that will take away the whole idea of America being the land of opportunity and freedom. Also in text 4 it states, “The experts (academics, pollsters and civil servants) have all calculated that in the last four Australian federal elections the results would have been the same even had the voting been voluntary.” This shows that whether voting is mandatory or not, the results will still be close. As a result, voting should not be mandatory because even if it was mandatory, the results will stay the same and it would take freedom away from the
