The video was very informative about William Kentridge’s art creations. One artwork that I found especially interesting was his work with charcoal. This fascinated me because we recently worked with charcoal in class and learned about how different lines and textures symbolize different things. Being able to apply what we learned in the studio with Kentridge’s charcoal art was thought-provoking. While observing the video footage of the charcoal artwork, I was alert and looking at the detail of the artwork to see which lines look angry, happy, delicate or rough. This captivated me because the little scraps of the artwork formed together and created a picture of a women. Later in the video, it is seen that Kentridge is fanning the art work filled with all the scraps and all the scraps go soaring through the air in different directions. I found this engaging because if you were to observe the video in reverse it would look like the artwork was created through mid air. Kentridge is known for his inventive process by which he draws and erases with charcoal, recording his creations at each phase. After accumulating these clips, he composes a video of the images and creates a novel projection of art. The beauty of art is that there can be many different interpretations of the artwork to different people. For me, I thought of the video in reverse and watched a women become created from dust and air which reminded me of early Christian theories on human creation. To me this was astonishing. I never thought about using tiny clips of art and creating a video projection out of it. I liked his technique and creativity making that piece of art work with the scraps. It made me realize his artwork was innovative and different, which I thoroughly enjoyed
