The general topic of William Masonis’ poem, Get an Education, is that a boy was neglected by his mother as a child and now does not do well in school because he has no one to please. In these lines, the narrator talks about how as a result of the neglect, the child has nearly gone insane. The narrator says how he is a selfish brat who does not care for life. This is disturbing, but true because no attention means no rules and no rules means bad news. The middle of the paper may be sad, but it gets more hopeful as the poem continues. The previous section of the poem was sad, but the end should give the reader a feeling of hope when he reads it. The narrator feels sorry for the boy and wants the “nightmare to end”. He tells the mother that she has made things so bad, that he needs help to fix it: “You broke his heart, A wound more deep Than I alone can mend”. To fix the damage that has been done, he says to child's mother, You must help put things back together”. This means that the narrator and the mother will at least attempt at helping the child. To sum it all up, the mother may have neglected her child in the beginning of the story, but once she realizes the error of her ways, she and the narrator will work to get the boy smart and socially “healthy”
