William the Conqueror encountered a scarring aggregation of hardships throughout his life, specifically centering his childhood. Brought up as an illegitimate child, William was constantly teased. On top of this, his family’s dilemmas far continued. His mother, known as Arletta, abandoned William at the mere age of three to sprout her own family (Tilton 21). All the while, his father, Robert I was rarely available carrying the burden of his responsibilities as duke.
