someone were to ask you who Winston Churchill was, what would you response be? Many with a general education are likely to respond that he was the prime minister of Great Britain during World War 2. Of course they would be correct but that is only scratching the surface. What many people do not know about Winston Churchill is that throughout his entire life, he suffered from clinical depression. Winston referred to the depression as his “black dog”, which is a being found in British folklore that was considered to be a portent of death. In modern days, depression has gotten easier to diagnose and to aid. However, unfortunately for Churchill the first antidepressants weren’t even developed until his later years 1950s. I have a friend who was clinically depressed for more than a year and even with SSRIs and therapy, it was immensely difficult for him. …show more content…
He used an impressionist style to create his paintings, many of which were done in France, Egypt, or Morocco. A quote by William Rees-Mogg states It was in his paintings, that he was able to escape the trouble of everyday living and successfully allow himself solace. However painting is only temporary and depression can last for so long, that it was only able to alleviate the symptoms for as long as he painted. He also occupied a good amount of his years before prime minister by writing books as well. While it may not have done as much to help him with his depression as painting did, it was still a major part of his life as most of his income was earned through
