For this response paper I watched two films, the first film being Smoke Signal’s. Smoke Signal’s is about a young Indian man named Thomas. Thomas is from an Indian reservation where his parents were killed in a house fire. Arnold was a family friend who saved Thomas from the burning house. Thomas then was raised by his grandmother after the passing on his parents. Arnold had left his family ten years ago leaving behind a son named Victor. Victor had found out his father has passed away. Victor and Thomas started their journey to retrieve Arnolds remains with only Thomas’s jar full of change. The second film that I watched was Winter’s Bone. Winter’s Bone is about a seventeen year old girl from the Ozark mountains named Ree Dolly. While trying to keep her family together she finds out that her drug dealing father is missing and their house is up for collateral on his bail. When the sheriff tells Ree that she will lose the house if he does not show up for his court date. Ree gets herself in trouble while trying to find her father. In these two films poverty strickens in many ways. In both films location plays a role in poverty. In addition poverty is represented by the traditional culture. The houses don't have manicured grass or a white picket fence. The grass is scarce with debris in the yards. In the country they hunt for their food instead of going to the supermarket. In the same way location plays a role in Smoke Signal’s. In Smoke Signals the Native American culture is represented in a rural location because it looks like a country area. They drive old beat up cars like the girls car that only drives in reverse which shows that they are not materialistic. The lack of traffic shows that not a lot happens in the
