he various colors used throughout the story of ‘The Wizard of OZ’ describe the different places, objects and characters that Dorothy sees and meets on her magical journey. Each color plays a role of its own in this novel, which is also very similar to things and places people get to and go through in real life like sadness and happiness. The significance of the colors are symbols that represent multiple phases of life and different places, starting with a sad and gray sort of boring life setting at Dorothy’s farm where she lives in Kansas, all the way to the bright and happy yellow brick road where she wakes up. The colors throughout the novel seem to change from bright and cheery colors when things are going well to the dark and gloomy colors when things are going bad. So you can see that the colors depict good and evil. When they leave the Great Oz to do his task of killing the Wicked Witch of the West, Dorothy’s dress changes from green to white, which is the color of the Good Witch. After all, Dorothy is a good witch, but doesn’t really know it. Never thinking that she could kill anyone, the Wicked Witch of the West tries to steal Dorothy’s silver shoes because of the power they hold, but unfortunately, when the Scarecrow catches on fire, Dorothy throws a bucket of water to put it out and it hits the witch, which ends her life by melting her.

Colors can be used in different ways. It's used in mood, theme and setting. It's used in books, movies, and in people’s lives. Colors can also change the mood such as personality and attitude to a person in a story. Using dark colors like black or red can show an evil and gruesome side to a story. Using gray can show a gloomy or sad story. Then you can use bright colors like yellow, blue, and other colors to show a happy loving side to a story. Colors are more important than people think.
