The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical fantasy film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, but now Time Warner owns the rights to the film. Famous for its use of Technicolor, fantasy storytelling, musical score and unusual characters, over the years it has become one of the best-known films and part of American popular culture. The film starts in a sepia-tinted farm in Kansas in the early 1900s, Dorothy and her dog Toto get in trouble and they try to run away they get caught in a tornado’s path and somehow end up in the Land of Oz, where the film changes to Technicolor. Filming started in October 13, 1938 on the MGM Studios lot in Culver City, California, under the direction of Richard Thorpe. The film is also a book and it has become the America's greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale. It is a fantasy for children and is one of the most-read children's books. The film also has been considered "culturally significant" by the United States Library of Congress, which selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1989. In June 2007, the film was listed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.
