The emphasis was on establishing a value system for the upper class and middle class during the antebellum period. It had no true impact on the poor and minority women in the period. The ideals of true womanhood gave women special tasks and credited them with special virtues. A true woman spent her time raising her children and managing a household. They were to dress, speak, look & act how society wanted them too.
