In the progressive era, mostly young Jewish and Italian immigrant women, toiled at sewing machine producing ladies’ blouses where some were earning as little as three dollars. After a fire that occurred leaving almost two hundred dead, gave the confidence to the rest of them to join the international ladies’ Garment Worker Union the owner then responded firing them. After the owner fire the women they then took it upon themselves in creating a strike and demanded better protection in the manufacturing factories. In 1911 Alva Belmont ex-wife of railroad magnate contribute several of her cars to a parade; where she was supporting the ILGWU by the end of the parade she had won the strike with more than three hundred forms.
