Women have had a great role threw out history, being that of teachers, mothers, and even rulers. Woman have grown and changed threw many years. Woman in the late 1800’s were strong and independent earning their rights and equality, they were given rights to own property, woman were earning own wages, and they had some rights to their children in a divorce.
In the early 1800’s woman were not given rights to any property of their own only men were allowed to own property. Woman could never have their own property, even if they were not married yet. This was a great deal of hardship that woman faced in the early 1800’s. Women were granted new rights that they did not have access to before this time. They become more independent and no longer had to rely on a husband. Yet, many believe that woman were still treated just a poorly as they were in the early part of the 1800’s. Some say that woman were still put down and treated like unequally. For example many woman had to just accept that their husband was cheating. “For southern plantation women these contradictions were often glaring; wives might have to assume ignorance of their husbands’ extramarital affairs with slave woman”. (Frisken 2) Many people also believed woman when unequal because, woman “could not serve on juries, and few had access to higher education”, (Helen 3 ) woman also could not vote yet “In 1806, New Jersey changed its constitution, and no woman in the United States could vote because New Jersey women had been the only female voters in the country.”(Helen 3) Many people believe woman where still treated poorly and unfairly in the later part of the 1800’s
Women were treated poorly and fairly in the late 1800’s, they were given many new rights in life, yet still having some equality’s kept from them. I try to think of the positive in woman’s lives in the late 1800’s. They were granted many new rights that they were not allowed to have in the early part of the 1800’s. Woman in the early 1800’s where not allowed to do a lot of things for their selves in life.
