Media representations are the ways in which the media portrays certain groups, experiences, ideas, or topics from a particular ideological or value perspective. Media is a big effect on women and the way they portray themselves. In this article, “Should ‘Slut’ Be Retired?”, it talks about the word “slut” and how it is such a common word used nowadays to describe a woman who is or portrays herself as too sexual. The “correct” way women should be is that they must “Police themselves and remain minimally sexual, but at the same time females are also not supposed to be prudes.(www.nytimes.com)”. Feminists who “made smarter decisions” couldn't do a lot of things like wear makeup, have sex, etc. They’ve been told they can't have it all ways. Feminism has had many tensions over the years with women's self representation. They have dealt with that in ways such as, they want to be able to show up to places in sweatpants and a T-shirt and be looked upon as human beings. But we are put in a position that we are all trying to have competition, as in one dresses better than the other to impress a guy. A protest group against slut shaming became widely popular in 2011, saying, women should dress more appropriately to not be victimized. And this word, slut, comes from history and slaves, calling black women sluts because of how they lived their lives. Black women were objects of property back then. The word slut comes from the ancestral narratives and experiences that were passed down. Others would say body-shaming is what is better to use because it relates to race or class, but others use slut-shaming because we are more familiar with that
