Monday, February 1, 1960 at 4:30 p.m. four college students sat down at the lunch counter at Woolworth’s in Greensboro, North Carolina. All four young, black, men attended the local university, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University. When the waitress came to take their order Ezell Blair ordered a coffee only to be told “we don’t serve Negroes here”. It was this statement that began a nationwide protest against the unfair treatment suffered by Black Americans. Not only did these four black men remain seated after being told they needed to leave but individuals all over the nation began to follow suit, demanding fair treatment.
