In the late 19th century countries began to form alliances as in the German, Austria-Hungary, Italy alliance and the France, Russia, and Great Britain entente. As a result of the sense of nationalism spreading throughout Europe, Serbian nationalist group, Black Hand assassinated the Archduke of Austria when he came to visit because they wanted independence from Austria-Hungary. The Black Hand hoped the assassination would trigger a rebellion, but it ended up flaming out of control and starting World War 1. Many factors such as the alliances formed, militarism, and imperialism were the main causes of World War 1.

In regards to the causes of World War 1, the alliances formed was one major cause because countries would form these alliances to attack another country which would lead to wars stretched out between continents. In document A, it shows the European Alliances in 1914. The map shows that the triple alliance obviously had an advantage over the triple entente because Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy surrounded the countries of the triple entente. Similarly, document B also shows alliances but in the form of an image from Chicago Tribune by John T. McCutcheon. Document E shows England branching out and taking resources which may upset other countries that also want those resources. Document F is a diagram of the size of colonial empires in 1913. It shows Britain as the country with the most area and population of colonies which was a sign of power. As one can see, in regards to the underlying cause of world war 1, one major cause was imperialism because many countries began to colonize before the war which was a sign of power but it also upset other
