“December 7th, 1941. A date which will live in infamy. The United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” This is a quote by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, after the bombing at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, plunging the United States into World War II. While some differences between World War I and World War II are evident, the similarities are striking. WWI was caused by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. The Archduke was from the Austro-Hungarian empire. Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia for his death, and attacked Serbia. Russia, being Serbia’s allies, came to their defense by attacking Austria-Hungary. The German Empire attacked Russia, because their ally was Austria-Hungary. Britain and France were allies of Russia, and joined the war. The USA joined because of the sinking Italy, Bulgaria, and other empires soon joined because of alliances made before the war. WWII was started by the German annexation of Poland. Poland’s army was horrible, and was overrun with ease. What people may not know is that Russia and Germany were once allies, and they split Poland, before becoming bitter …show more content…
The Germans had the most advanced gas masks and mustard gas. When soldiers inhaled the gas, they felt a stomach pain, and irritation. They eventually died from mustard gas. The British and French had different ways of protecting themselves against the gas. The British used “The hoods”, which was a bag with eye holes, and the French used several different ways to protect themselves against the gas. These are peeing on a cloth to put over the mouth, and putting on goggles. Another consisted of a protective chemical on a cloth, and goggles. Later, the allies found a dead German corpse wearing a German gas mask. The gas mask was so effective, it was copied and used by every fighting force in
