In the dark and forbidding times of World War II, out of the ashes came a plan for peace. From the originally failed league of nations, came the United Nations which was originally the allies in World War II. This organization was founded by Franklin Delanor Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill in 1945. However, it wasn’t official until October 24 of that year. When the UN was first created there were 51 member states, and currently there are 193. There was much controversy as to where there head quarters should be placed, but it was eventually agreed upon to be in New York. To have an influence in the UN you must be a member. If you want to be a member you must except their charter, and then will be evaluated for membership. The body of the UN is made up of 6 parts; they are the General Assembly, Security Counsel, the Secretariat, Economic and Social Counsel, and the Trusteeship Council. The General Assembly’s job is to get together and decide and fix the most urgent problems. For each member state within the General Assembly, they get one vote on the issue at hand. The Security Counsel’s job is to create peaceful solutions, and if needed enforce them. The 15 member states will meet in NYC whenever peace is threatened. The Secretariat is made up of 44,000 people from 180 different countries. The leader of the Secretariat is the Secretary’s General. The Secretariat’s job is to carry out substantive, and administrated work by the General Assembly and the Security Counsel. The Economic and Social Counsel has 54 members that are elected every 3 years. They are under the authority of the General Assembly, and deal with social development, status of women, crime and narcotics prevention, and sustainable development. In the trusteeship council they provide international supervision over trust territories, and payments. In the Middle East they have observer groups, forces, assistance missions, and create new governments. In America we have hosted elections, talks, and negotiations. In Europe, they manage ceasefire lines, watch buffer zones, make peace agreements, work towards a democratic society, and provide relief assistance. In Asia and the Pacific, they have reconciliation, fulfill tasks, work to a democratic government, and consolidating stability. In Africa, the have long campaigns, active support, and field missions. All of these are sources through which they adapt to keep peace. They also include economic development, famine relief, women's rights movements, environmental protection, and more!
