The Role of Nutritional Interventions with Wound Healing
Clinical Question
One common issue faced by nurses in healthcare is wounds. The treatment of pressure ulcers alone cost approximately $11 billion dollars per year in the United States (Sernekos, 2013). The estimated annual cost to treat pressure ulcers in the United Kingdom is approximately £1.4 to £2.1 billion pounds (Siang Choo, Hayter, & Watson, 2013). Pressure ulcers wounds are important to nursing practice because pressure ulcers often develop as a result of a failure to implement nursing protocols. Pressure ulcers are only one type of wound that nurses are tasked with treating. Because wound healing has such a huge impact on healthcare it posses the question of how to best facilitate healing.
For the sake of this analysis, the question posed is not limited to pressure ulcers but wounds in general. Numerous studies mention the use of nutritional interventions in the treatment of wounds. This led to a PICOT treatment question, in wound care, what is the effect of a diet high in protein and calories on the rate of wound healing as compared with healing rates in patients with no dietary modifications?
Population = patients with wounds
Intervention = dietary interventions
Comparison = no dietary intervention
Outcome = improved healing rate
Time = time

This question represents a quantitative research approach because variables are at the heart of the research being conducted. The variable in this PICOT question is dietary interventions. In order to determine the results of different evidence-based practice findings the goal was to locate articles that presented a synopses of studies that way multiple studies and their outcomes could be reviewed in a fewer articles (Houser,
