The only South American country to have ever hosted the Olympic Games, it's Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! The Olympics are held every four years in a different location each time. Athletes from all over the world compete against each other in an intense battle to be crowned champion! The Games last 16 days from start to finish, including the opening and closing ceremonies. After they wrap up, the Paralympics begin. Hosted in the same stadium as the Olympics, the Paralympics give people with disabilities a chance to compete. Over time, people have grown to love the Olympics, while others are totally against them!

Although there are many great things about the Olympics, there's also a dark side to them. Many issues arise, questioning the very existence of the Games. Already a poor country, Brazil went even deeper into debt by hosting this year's Olympics. Arguably, the $4.6 billion could have been used for a better cause, like helping the homeless. Some people, like athletes, would be enraged if the Olympics were dropped, while others would jump for joy. There are pros and cons to each side of the argument. The Olympics give us a source of entertainment and pride. Furthermore, spectators are inspired by the athletes and are motivated to reach for their dreams. On the other hand, host nations of the Olympics almost always spend over their planned budget, which can result in a major financial crisis for the country. The ban of this major event would lead to fewer blood doping cases and would minimize the use of performance enhancing drugs.
