The poem, “Daddy,” by Sylvia Plath, is narrated by an Electra like speaker who struggles to move on because, she feels confined by her past. The speaker’s dad is a brute in this story. She refers to him as, “[the] Ghastly statue with one gray toe/ Big as a Frisco seal” (Plath, 9-10). This refers to the heavy weight she carries; comparing her father to a statue tells the reader about his stoic, cold persona, while the one grey toe alludes to the condition which kills him.
“Daddy, I have had to kill you,” (Plath, 7-8). She uses this quote in a metaphorical way since she does not in fact kill her father, but she needs to kill the memory of him in order to grow and become independent. The constant use of strong imagery sets a scene the reader
