Reflexology is a traditional method of message that focuses primarily on the feet, hands, and ears. This method of massage was originally developed in Europe and Russia over one hundred years ago with inspiration from Ivan Pavlov, a noble prize winning Russian researcher (1). According to reflexology theory organs, glands and other parts of the body are linked to specific points in the hands and feet (2). The theory of Reflexology aims to influence a somato- visceral response through manual massage. The theory is based on the idea that the body sometimes misinterprets information from the brain resulting in illness and certain organ systems correspond with distinct areas of the feet, hands, and ear. It is common practice that one trying to become certified in reflexology to have at least 500 hours of massage training and enroll in a reflexology course (8). There is an American Reflexology Certification board which requires a minimum of 110 hours of class instruction and a passing grade on its reflexology exam for full accreditation (9).
After searching through organizations providing reflexology training it seems as though many massage therapists can practice reflexology without obtaining training outside of massage school. It appears that reflexology is a specific path on the massage trail similar to the multiple techniques within chiropractic but it is not necessary to seek further education outside of the curriculum to practice the technique. In the cases of wellness center’s they may perhaps be more stringent on ensuring that their therapists have obtained continued education in the field because of the higher demand for
