Thelma Mothershed was also a smart girl, but she had a health problem. Thelma had a heart problem condition, and she had to cheat the system to be able to get into Central High. Her health problem made her have a hard time breathing and it weaken her. While she was at school she felt bad, and as the protestors kept pressuring her made her become weaker each day. Her parents even thought of taking her out of the school.
Ernest Green was the oldest from all the group of little nine. Green was going to become a senior when he entered Central High. He was also the very first and last “Little Nine” one to graduate from Central High. Jefferson Thomas was not mention a lot in the book. In those two years they went through hell trying to survive the angry mobs, and all the reporters. White people protested and try putting a stop to integration by threatening the nine teenagers and their family. Not only did they get threats but they also got hit, punched, spit and chased. When the nine teenagers went to Central High things got worst. Each day they were getting death threats, called names, punched and discriminated and the worst part was that no one defended them. It took a while for them to get help from the United States president Eisenhower. He sent the federal troops to protect them from all the white protestors, but not even they could protect them from all the bullies inside school. The students survived one year at the school and Ernest was the first African American to graduate from Central High. After the summer that they got out, the governor from Arkansas closed most of the schools trying to stop integration. After two years of schools being closed they re-opened them but it was too late for some
