What do you think about when you think of the Holocaust? We may think that we understand it, but we really don’t at all. The amount of human life lost is beyond our understanding. We can’t think of anyone or anything that could ever cause that much destruction. We don’t have the brainpower to think that anyone would ever be that cruel and evil for no good reason. Well, here we are. The only good way for us to understand what happened is to think about the people that survived the concentration camps. Concentration camps were the most evil places in the whole world at the time or at any time. The cruel things that the Nazis did to people there were unspeakable. One of those people is Jack Gruener who was also known as Yanek Gruener. At age 14 he was living in a ghetto with his family just at the dawn of the war. Him and his family were under the worst conditions 3 imaginable when, the unthinkable happened. He was taken to a concentration camp where he would never see his family again. All of them would be brutally killed or taken away from him. He was completely on his own. (“Prisoner B-3087”) Jack Gruener was subject to almost all the horrors of World War 2. He went to 10 concentration camps where he was treated like a dog that disobeyed his owner. He was whipped, beaten, and his cellmates were killed right in front of him. He made a friend once named Fred. When Fred got sick because of one of the guards getting sick, he was beaten to death because of his inability to do work.
