Wallingford Treasures While driving around dropping my students off at their houses on Friday, I was thinking of what piece of architecture I could use for this assignment. I was looking at numerous building but one really caught my eye. I was driving down Main Street to the center of town when three cop cars pulled out in front of me with their lights on. That is when it dawned on me. I looked to the left and there it was the police station. I have never really taken a good look at the building since I moved to Wallingford about 20 years ago but because of this assignment it really made me look. I quickly dropped off all my students and went back and took a picture. When I came home I went online to immediately research information about the building. I found out that is was built in the 1920s. It was originally built as an armory for the military. This piece of architecture was built in the postmodernism era. The outside is a “gothic style” building. Gothic style is an “architectural style of the late middle ages, featuring high pointed spires and pointed arches” (Altshuler p109). After I was able to really look over the picture I realized that the building actually looks like a castle. It is made up of all brick with the 4 corners made up of high towers that also have high points on top. At the entrance of the building, has a high arch and it looks like there should be a drawstring bridge that should be lowered to enter. It has a big half oval opening that has two doors and the rest windows that make up the rest of the arch. The building also has small rectangle windows that give off the castle feel all around the building. The function of this building corresponds well with who is currently occupying the building. As of today, the Wallingford Police force occupies the building. Ever since the building was built in the 1920s it has been used for the same purpose just in different ways. When it first opened it was an armory for the military and now it has become the Wallingford Police Station. The building reminds me of a gothic castle that has a dungeon inside which could portray the “holding cell” that police put people in after they have been arrested. Just as well as back when it was first built, the building represents strength and durability. In the fifteen years that I have lived in Wallingford, I have never actually taken the time and looked at the architectures. There is so much more to this town and its history then I have ever known. With the research I also found that Wallingford has some of the oldest building in Connecticut. I am amazed at what I found out. I am now going to take the time and actually walk around the neighborhood. Over the weekend, Wallingford celebrated the harvest season. This is where we shut down the center of town and everyone comes out and enjoys themselves. This year
