World War 1 started in 1914 and ended in 1918. The alliances of eight countries, the glorification of militarism and the importance of imperialism all were underlying causes of ww1. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the bang that started the war as to the alliance systems, militarism, and imperialism which could be compared to the gun power.

One of the most important underlying causes leading to WWI are the alliance systems. The triple alliance, which included: Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary, while the triple entente consisted of: Great Britain, France, and Russia. The amount spent on navy and army advancements in 1890 through 1914 was drastic! In 1910 Great Britain spent the most percentage on its navy to protect their overseas empire. Arms build-up was a lead to the underlying cause because way too much money was spent bettering the war-used advancements in the 6 countries. Intimidation of one country having more updates to their military might become peace for the arms build-up. Bernard Van Bulow, a German chancellor, spoke a few words in a speech before the German congress. In his speech, he worried about 3 countries. England had a bigger empire, France was claiming lands, and Russia started gaining victories.The word anvil means to armor, or anchor down. This means that Germany will either attack strong, or take the beatings, but won't let their chance at victory go. Germany is more likely to attack England, France, and Russia, so Germany can compare up to what each of the 3 countries have. Von Bulow believed in survival of the fittest because he wanted to demolish all competition and take the lead. Arms build-up is more important than the network of alliances because Bulow had a feeling Germany would win, and due to his feeling, it would get self-determination levels to a high standard.
