The most important cause of World War One was militarism because European countries were very competitive with each other regarding who had a stronger military, which caused a lot of tension, therefore starting World War One. Militarism is the policy of military preparation. In other words, it is when countries invest and build up more armed forces and weaponry for defence or use in war. Militarism increased tension between countries as they competed to have more military power. All of the countries were engaged in militarism, but the main countries involved were Germany, Russia, Great Britain, France, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The author believed that the German militarism was going to be the start of something bad. In this document, there is a German soldier holding a very large rifle and is walking in the direction away from civilization, peace, and progress and towards war and barbarism. Strangely enough, the Germans had invested an additional fifty million pounds to their already extremely large military.
