Rhetorical Analysis - Essay #8 The Author of essay number eight talks about their experience growing up as a female, but ending up as a male. XX man (as they call themself) begins to describe how from a child, they felt like an outsider. They didn’t fit in, and often felt like they weren’t who they were meant to be. The use of emotion adds a sense of relatability and sadness. The writer puts use to pathos in this essay. They use a lot of emotion and sorrow in their writing. They describe how they feel after certain events, this helps you really feel how ‘she’ felt before her change, and after ‘he’ felt after his change. “XX man” describes how they have no pictures or memories of a boy named Adam. This slows down the description, adds a relaxing tone, and drags the time. Instead of abrupt sentences for dramatisation, they are long, so you can really process how the person feels in the moment. The sentence type that is used is compound-complex. Along with that are declarative sentences. “ I sat in the headmaster’s office and stated that it would be absurd to put a flat-chested boy who needs to shave his chin stubble in a girl’s dorm again” (173). Overall, sentence structure and diction creates a calm, detailed recreation of events. There was never a shocking moment, because of the simple tone. It makes the reader feel pity for the writer and relatability to anyone who has experienced similar events. Lastly, using pathos provided sympathy to the writer. The goal of the story was to not make you feel bad, but help you understand what it’s like to not feel comfortable in your skin. There is no such thing as normal, only
