"The Yellow Wallpaper" is a strange and creepy story about a woman with a mental illness, moving into an asylum like house with her husband John. The main character in "The Yellow Wallpaper" goes insane while staying in her asylum of a house and needs help. The main character in "The Yellow Wallpaper" had her "illness" from the beginning and it became more serious and developed more as the story went on.
The first way to tell she had her illness to start with is because she is taken away from her child, family, and society. Toward the beginning of the piece, Gilman writes, "It is fortunate Mary is so good with the baby...And yet I cannot be with him, it makes me so nervous" (649). In this quote the reader is shown that the woman has a child, but is not allowed to see him.To show how John thinks she isn't well enough yet Gilman writes, "When I get really well, John says we will ask Cousin Henry and Julia down for a long visit" (649). On the first page of the story the main character says, "For the windows are barred for little children, and there are rings and things in the walls" (Gilman 648). She is either told or believes that the bars on the windows and rings in the wall are for children, but really they are meant to keep her in and keep her safe. Gilman continues to let readers know what kind of house the main character is living in by using hints like, "He said that after the wallpaper was changed it would be the heavy bedstead, and then the barred windows, and then the gate at the head of the stairs, and so on" (649). All of the contraptions that usually are meant to keep children safe are really meant to keep her safe and keep her inside as if she were a child.
