Yellowstone National Park is a nearly 3,500-sq.-mile wilderness protected by the U.S. It was formed on top of a volcanic hot spot. Mostly in Wyoming, the park spreads into some parts of Montana and Idaho too. Yellowstone features a display of beautiful and dramatic canyons, alpine rivers, lush forests, hot springs and gushing geysers, including its most famous geyser, Old Faithful. It is also home to hundreds of animal species.
Establishment
Yellowstone national park was established on March 1, 1872 by the U.S. congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant. A man named Hayden thought of the idea to create the park in the region. He was also the first and most enthusiastic supporter to the park. The U.S. is the official owner of the park. Many tribes and bands used the park as their home, hunting grounds, and transportation routes earlier in time, to and after European and American arrival. The human history of the Yellowstone region goes back more than 11,000 years. The stories of people in Yellowstone are usually found in objects that give information about past human activities in the region. Today, park managers use archeological and historical studies help explain how the humans that lived there in the past left their mark in the times that have gone by. The scientific explanations of the past cultures of these people can help us learn about how the groups of people can identify themselves and their connections to the park.
