I’ve decided I wanted to write my article around inequality in America with a focus on “Black America”. It has recently been a frenzy in America with numerous unarmed black men being killed by the police. I’m also African American and had a bad experience with police at an early age, so I was intrigued to see another perspective on why they feel we fear them. The source that I chose to evaluate is titled “Yes, Black America Fears the Police. Here’s Why.” The article is written by Nikole Hannah-Jones, and is published on the site ProPublica. Propublica is based out of Manhattan, New York. It is “an independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.” Nikole, who was formerly a writer for The Oregonian and also worked for The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C, started writing for them in late 2011. At the time of the article she had been living in inner city New York for the past 4 years. She moved there from Portland and actually chose the area due to the fact it was near a police precinct. The article uses testimonies from friends and neighbors along with things she has witnessed or experienced first hand. The article was written last year and I do it feel it’s still current. However, it is missing some of the more recent killings that have occurred. One statistic that was mentioned is that “in 2013, more than 50 percent of murder victims across the country were black, though only 13 percent of the total population.” A U.S. FBI government site was used as her reference and I was able to validate the accuracy of the statement.
