Every Nintendo handheld has had that exciting franchise that brings forth new and refreshing ideas. The Gameboy had Tetris and Pokémon –the Gameboy Color had Pokémon Yellow, the GBA gave way to Fire Emblem being localized for release in the USA, and the Nintendo DS presented touch-screen gaming. Thanks to the touch-screen, franchises like Brain Age and Nintendogs became a worldwide sensation. Well, there’s a new phenomenon ready to take the world by surprise, and it is on the Nintendo 3DS. Enter: Yo-kai Watch.
At first glance, you may think Yo-kai Watch is just a Pokémon imitator. However, your assumption would be incorrect. Sure, there are some similarities between the two – namely the fact you explore a vast world, recruit Yo-kai, and battle other Yo-kai. Beyond that, the parallels between Pokémon and Yo-kai Watch is now at an end.

To put things simply: Yo-kai are ghosts that populate the world and cannot be seen by humans. Events occur in the game that allow you to see the Yo-kai, communicate with them, recruit them onto your side, battle evil Yo-kai, and evolve them into new forms. While all of that may sound like standard RPG far, what separates Yo-kai Watch from other RPGs is its emphasis on exploration and discovery. Players will need to search and find Yo-kai to recruit to their squad. Random battles with Yo-kai will occur, but these types of events are few and far
