Smallest Dragon Boy written by Anne McCaffrey and Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rudyard Kipling have many common similarities. Both main characters are curious and brave. The fathers are heroes. And the mothers are housewives. But one uncommon trait is both antagonists are angry. Nagaina was a vengeful snake seeking blood for her husband’s death. Beterli was an aloof candidate, angered during his 8th impression. Both characters impact the story greatly because of their attitudes towards the main character. Nagaina and Beterli both have much resentment caused by the protagonists in their story.

It was Beterli’s last Impression, and he could have possibly known who Keevan’s father is. This could have caused Beterli to believe Keevan had inherited his father’s dragon riding skills. Beterli said “Babes don’t give orders to candidates around here, babe!” (p. 154) and could have told Keevan this insult to prove his power over first year candidates. Nagaina had always been at the top of the hierarchy in the garden. When Rikki arrived she decided she must “make an end of him” (p.19). Nagaina lost her husband and now was by her lonesome without a protective force to watch over her. Feeling threatened would make both Beterli and Nagaina angry with Rikki Tikki and Keevan.
The last reason for their displeasure could be sadness. Nagaina was very depressed by Nag’s death. Losing anyone close to you will always make you mournful. When Rikki asked Darzee where Nagaina was he spoke “on the rubbish heap by the stables mourning for Nag” (p.23). Beterli was involved in his final Impression and could have felt discouraged. He thought he would be labeled as foolish, so Beterli showed swagger instead. An example to prove my point is “Beterli stepped up officiously to ‘his’ egg, daring anyone to come near it” (p. 150).
