This article is about the findings by the Royal Commission on youth detention centres and the effect they will have. Some racial prejudice is also shown on the part of Australia’s legal system, as criminologist Chris Cunneen found that 70% of incarcerated youths are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Advantages of stronger enforcement of child welfare laws include a higher level of safety for children who have been incarcerated. Many children who have committed crimes do not belong in prison as it will not reform or change them in any way other than hardening them or even shaping them into better criminals. However, a disadvantage to this would be the possibility of continued criminal activity by the juvenile delinquents if they received a sentencing alternate to prison time. However, due to research and evidence of the mistreatment and negative effects juvenile detention has on children, it is clear that the answer to juvenile delinquency is not always prison and, for those who require prison time, stronger monitoring and vigilance in relation to the protection of the children is
