Zachary Taylor was born in Virginia in 1784 and was the third son of Richard & Sarah Taylor. Not much later in his life as an infant he traveled with his mother and siblings to join his father in Kentucky on the land he was granted in honor of his military service. On the farm Zachary grew up on his dad taught him about farming and business. Zachary was also home schooled by his mother. In 1808 he was named first lieutenant in the seventh regiment and Zachary worked as a recruiting officer. In 1809 Zachary led a company of men to New Orleans from Kentucky. A large amount of troops became ill or died at Terre Aux Boeufs due to poor camp conditions. He took a leave of absence due to his illness in 1809. During that time period he met a women named Margaret Smith who later Zachary got married to in 1810 in Louisville Kentucky. They were granted 324 acres of land as a wedding gift from Richard Taylor. Zachary and Margaret made a happy family with five daughters and one son. Zachary ended up retiring from the U.S. Army in 1815.

Zachary had a terrible stomach problem the next day that may have been “cholera morbus”. He died five days later on July 9, and more than 100,000 people lined the funeral route to see him laid to rest on July 13. Zachary’s final resting place was in Louisville, Kentucky, the site of the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery and Monument today. His death was very sudden and unexpected to the United Sates nation. Zachary left behind his country and a vice president, Millard Fillmore, who supported the Compromise of 1850. The Compromise of 1850 came out during his term and it occurred to people that he might have vetoed it if he wouldn’t have passed away.
