Throughout learning about Zaroff, He could be characterized as confident and evil.
First off, Zaroff could be characterized as confident in many ways.
In the book Zaroff has never lost a hunt. This is because he sets up unique traps and thinks about what his prey would do. In the book it states, “And if they win?” The smile on the general’s face widened. “To date i have not lost (Richard Connell page 7).” The general believes he will never lose a fight.
The second reason Zaroff could be confident is he hangs all his trophies in his house. From the book it says, “The hall were mounted heads of many animals--lions, tigers, elephants, moose, bears; larger or more perfect specimens Rainsford had never seen (Richard Connell page 4).” Zaroff

In three hours you could get so far but for Zaroff that is nothing. In the book it states “I give him a supply of food and and excellent hunting knife. I give him three hours’ start. i am to follow, armed only with a pistol of the smallest caliber and range (Richard Connell page 7 ).” He gives them all of this supplies because, he feels like even with the supplies they still can’t beat him.
Next Zaroff could be characterized as evil in three different ways.
Zaroff used to hunt animals until it got easy for him. He then moved to hunting humans which is pretty creepy. He hunts people because they can think and are more interesting to hunt. In the book it says “ I wanted the ideal animal to hunt,” explained the general. So i said, What are the attributes of an ideal quarry? And the answer was, of course, It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason. (Richard Connell page 6)
The second reason Zaroff could be evil is if you refuse to hunt you will have to deal with Ivan. Let’s just say everyone picks the hunt. The book states “Suppose he refuses to be hunted? Oh, said the general, I give him his option of course. he need not play that game if he doesn’t wish to. If he does not wish to hunt, I turn him over to Ivan.
