During hurricane Katrina, the reality of what happened in the city went unnoticed. For instance, those who stayed in the city during the storm received harsh treatment. Even from law enforcement. The military and police went around doing anything they deemed necessary. Throughout the book Zeitoun we see the reality of what is happening, a first-person account also known as giving a human voice to the situation. Unlike the news reporters who went for pictures that would yield the most views. Hundreds of years prior there was another event that would benefit from having a human voice. That event is the Civil War. But it would need to be told from a very specific view, that of a slave from the South who was forced to fight in the war. There are countless events that could use a human voice. A slave fighting in the civil war has the ability to tell many events as one. This would be able to cover a slaves conflict of interest. In addition to slavery in general and the worst war in U.S. history, the Civil War. In the war, African Americans fought for the North and the South. But there aren’t any nonfiction accounts of what went on for southern slaves during the Civil War, although it is known that many had to participate in the Confederate Army. A slave’s account of having to fight against there own freedom would encompass many conflicts, ethical hardships, and weighing of the consequences. He would have to decide if he could successfully run away along with what would happen if he refused to fight. Some other questions would be answered such as, ‘What if I get caught?’ or ‘What if I were to commit mutiny during the war?’. The thoughts running through a slave’s mind whilst being told he needs to fight for his life against his freedom are unpredictable and could really use a human
