Zong Sacrifice In The 1700's

The film Belle took place in the 1700’s. During this time slavery remained legal and the color of a person’s skin did have an enormous impact on how people were treated. African’s were primarily viewed as inferior and were easily taken advantage of. The Zong Massacre case was one example of how their cultural tried pursuing this. Consequently, I became disturbed on the amount of population that thought the lives of these slaves had no value. The Africans lives were taken in an attempt to making a larger profit. They were murdered and claimed as lost ship cargo. The ship owners later attempted to file an insurance claim to gain a profit. However, I was inspired on how the court case turned out. Surprisingly, Judge Mansfield ruled the claim as insurance fraud, leading me to the realization that numerous people during the 1700’s supported human rights. I came to the assumption a powerful judge, during this time would have sided with the ship owners to avoid backlash in the community. The treatment she received from her family was predictable for the 1700’s. Unfortunately, she continued to be frowned upon for being biracial, in addition to being conceived outside of marriage. I assumed this cultural would have a greater concerned over the color of a person’s skin, yet It turns out illegitimacy hold the greater affair.
