“As a leader during the Harlem Renaissance Zora Neale Hurston was a revolutionary for helping to protect African American rights. She was known during the Harlem Renaissance for her wit, irreverence, and folk writing style”(). She came to Harlem with just a $1.50 to her name. When she became nationally published for her short story “ Drenched in Light” she felt Harlem would be her new home. Soon she became apart of a close circle of friends with the same aspirations to relate what black life was like the good, the bad, and the ugly through a variety of art forms.
After becoming close to Langston Hughes and collaborating on plays and short stories. With help from Hughes and other friends they produced a magazine which was devoted to young black artist. The purpose of the magazine was to show the good and bad of black lives. The magazine was called “Fire”. Hurston herself contributed to the magazine with two articles called “Color Struck” and “Sweat”. The magazine was only able to release one issue due to funding and mismanagement. Zora Neale Hurston was a leader during the Harlem Renaissance because she embraced all aspects of black culture during the time. But she was also met with a lot of backlash and criticism about the way she saw black culture.

She was one writer during the Renaissance that didn't portray blacks as victims of their injustice and racism. Instead she depicted blacks as being proud of their culture.“ Many blacks also rejected Hurston’s political ideas and her support for racial separation laws in the South. Hurston, however, made no apologies for her work. She said the richness of black culture existed to be enjoyed, celebrated and made into literature”
