“Tableau” By Countee Cullen Significance of Metaphor and Simile Metaphor and simile are important literary elements. Countee Cullen uses them in his poem “Tableau” to create certain effects. For example, in line three the poet uses a metaphor when he writes, “The golden splendor of the day.” In this metaphor the two things being compared are the white boy and sunlight. The way they are similar is that both the white boy and sunlight are bright. This is significant because it shows that the white boy is a beautiful thing. Another example of a metaphor is in line four when the poet writes, “The sable pride of night.” The two things being compared in this metaphor are the black boy and the nightlight. The way the black boy and the nightlight are similar is both are dark. The author mentions this to emphasize that the black boy is as beautiful as the white boy. The last example is in line eleven where the poet uses a simile when he writes, “That lightning brilliant as a sword.” Here it shows how the white boy is being compared to a sword in this simile. This simile is significant because it shows that only the white boy can protect and save the relationship between the black boy and him.
