Thompson feels alone even when home surrounded by his family and friends. He knew that anyone that has never been to war would not understand his point of view. People are no longer as interested in the war or its soldiers. Those who have served do not have much in common with the ones who have not served. There are many things now days that are given a higher priority than the war. Many of the soldiers live at army bases which are secluded to only soldiers and their family. A seclusion that keeps them shut off from the rest of the world. In a base, they have no reason to leave everything them or their family needs is located inside that base. The military has been proven to be the better part of society. Many of the men and women that serve are very well educated and professional. Throughout their career they are reminded that they decided they want to be better and they are pushed to reach that potential. Many feel as if the ones that serve for our country are underpaid but that has been proven wrong. The soldiers have actually seen a dramatic pay raise in the past 11 years. More and more foreigners have joined the service in hopes to gain citizenship to the United States. The soldiers are to live by a certain set of standards but some have felt that these standards suggest that they are better than the country they are fighting to protect.
