Social Services Worker (SSW) at the Department of Community Based Services (DCBS) uses solution focused intervention with some clients’ in an attempt to complete the treatment/safety plan that is mandated by the judicial system. During monthly home visits or family team meeting the SSW uses solution focused intervention by way of verbal communication that is directed toward the client developing a resolution for the issues at hand and attaining the goals establish during the treatment plan. To help clients see potential solutions the SSW may ask question such as “are there times when this has been less of a problem?” or “what did you/others do that was helpful?” The questions asked are usually focused on the present or on the future since problems are best solved by focusing on what is already working …show more content…
As a result, a practicum student/ social worker may alter his/her communication style multiple times during a single workday to maximize his/her effectiveness with the clients, colleagues, supervisors, or community members. The Department of Community Based Services relies on the strength of the SSW verbal communication skills, since it serves as an advocate for a diverse population. (E.g. public benefits office, providing clients referrals, serving as an expert witness in a courtroom, or testifying before legislators).
The SSW uses solution focused intervention to encourage the client to open-up and enhance the client/therapist relationship in an attempt to maximize the results whilst using solution focused intervention practicum students are also encouraged to use opened/closed ended questions, clarify and summarize the client statement to prevent miscommunication and alleviate any barrier that hinder fluency during communication.
