It is imperative that children and young people are given the opportunity to develop their skills in relation to coaching and mentoring, because this encourages participation and inclusion.
Relationship building – children thrive in the context of relationships when trust and confidentiality is displayed between themselves and coach or mentor. Communicating is fundamental as using language which is verbal and non-verbal, showing empathy, honesty and asking questions and understanding what is being discussed enables a better relationship to be established between both parties.
Empathy – the ability to imagine how an individual feels in different situations and responding with care. This method of communication enables individuals with the coach-learner relationship to listen and respond to each other in an approach manner. To establish a relationship between coach or mentor and children it is necessary that feelings, thoughts and behaviours are taken into account.
Listening – when communicating with children it is essential that good communication habits are portrayed this enables adults to grasp what a child is talking about. It is necessary that the various forms of communication is understood by children. Active or

This can be established by using a tried and tested method of working such as the GROW model (Goals, Current Reality, Options or obstacles, Will or way forward) when coaching and mentoring. It is essential that the coach follows this model as it enables them to focus effectively on a child’s learning and guidance, than leading and supporting as such this allows a child to explore their options therefore looking at both advantages and disadvantages of issues which may occur.
