I have spent eight years in Surestart/Early Help family and parenting support, working with families, children and young people. This was on a 1-2-1 basis in the family home, nursery settings, schools and in the community. I have also worked with families, looking at possible barriers preventing positive changes for families/children/young people, and how to support them to become more proactive in making changes and give the best possible outcome. Whilst engaging with families I always aim to be honest, available, do what I said I would do, challenge and be challenged, support with issues they were struggling with outside the home e.g. housing, benefits, jobcentre plus, courts, school meetings and accompanying to Surestart/Early help settings. I have found that by gaining a family’s trust, they become more open to the support and changes I have suggested they could make to improve life for all family members and better outcomes for all. …show more content…
We then look at what issues they would feel comfortable to begin support with and what they may have tried in the past e.g. parenting programmes. We look at the areas for the child or young person, around the Framework for Assessment which will look at the child/young person’s needs, parenting capacity and the family and environmental factors. A detailed assessment will look at the welfare of the child or young person, any safeguarding concerns, health and well-being and parenting. Strengths and resilience are also a major part of the process and any wider influences outside of the family
